Degreasing Oil Contaminated floors Is n essential step in the preparation of oily floors for coating.
Power scrubbers used in combination with powerful degreasers accelerate the removal of oil but one must assume that there will be remnants of oil after the degreasing and an oil tolerant epoxy primer should be used after degreasing as the best practice.
We recently went back to complete a final phase of flooring installations. The customer had been dry ice blasting machines in this area for 6 months
– We discovered that in many areas the oil had penetrated 4 inches into the concrete!
Degreasers are chemicals that mix with the oil and allow it to be removed
– as the surface oil is removed, the oil from below wicks up to the surface overnight and the floor surface is oily again. This oil again needs to be removed until you have removed MOST of the oil-
IF YOU HAVE THE TIME, YOU CAN DECONTAMINATE YOUR FLOORS IN THE SAME WAY THEY WERE CONTAMINATED- over a period of time.
Remediation
We have degreasers that penetrate into the concrete and can extract oil up to 3/8″ in one procedure. We scrub the degreasers with industrial scrubbers and vacuum them up .
